International Visions - The Gallery is pleased to present the first of our 2007 Anniversary Exhibitions:

Sylvie Barcelo: “Mixed Diversity”

Alonzo Davis: “Passageways”

January 18 to February 25, 2007

Opening Reception ~ Saturday, January 20th from 6:30 to 9:00 pm

Sylvie Barcelo (1959 - 1994) was born in Montreal, Quebec. Sylvie exhibited widely in Canada and the United States, as well as in Bamako, Mali and Mogadishu, Somalia. Strongly influenced by her extensive travels throughout India, Nepal, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas, Barcelo combined symbols and colors from a diverse cultural spectrum to create her own distinctive style of abstraction and fragmentation. In particular, her experiences in Mali and Somalia profoundly shaped her painting style in terms of her use of space, color, and structural forms. Barcelo's paintings are deeply personal and yet insistently connected to broad cultural codes. As these highly evocative works continue to inspire audiences, her vibrant and colorful acrylic paintings in fact bear her legacy. Sylvie Barcelo passed away from breast cancer in 1994.

Alonzo Davis, a California native currently working in Maryland, brings his unique, innovative technique to the series “Passageways.” Davis melds paint, bamboo, copper, leather, and indigenous textiles into spectacular mixed media works. He remarks of Passageways that he looks “at these artworks as paintings in the round.” Each work is a singular creation with a spirit and personality of its own. Characteristic of Davis’s work, the series takes inspiration from a rich cultural spectrum: the Southwestern United States, Brazil, Haiti, West Africa, and the Pacific Rim. Alonzo Davis has exhibited widely in the United States and in Costa Rica, Finland, and Sweden. His works are held by collectors throughout the world, and his site specific works and murals, including the Olympic Mural Series for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, grace cities throughout the United States.
