International Visions Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, Áshe: New Works by James Phillips, featuring the Jitterbug Waltz Series and others (October 6 – November 6, 2010). Áshe, an African word meaning “life force,” is communicated through brilliant colors and bold geometric forms that radiate from figures in motion.
African spiritual heritage is the essence of Phillips’ visual language. While Phillips is aligned with the Weusi Artist Collective and AfriCobra (of the Black Arts Movement, 1960s-70s), his accomplishments “are highlighted rather than mirrored by his association with these groups,” according to the artist. “The motifs, images and icons found in my work are copied, reshaped and integrated into a contemporary artistic aesthetic,” Phillips states.
