International Visions is pleased to present:

Verna Hart

“Places, Spaces, Moments in Time…”

Blue Note watercolor on paper, 2006

May 23 to June 30, 2007

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 26th from 6:30-9:00pm

A native New Yorker, Verna Hart returns to DC for her second exhibition at International Visions on May 23. Places, Spaces, Moments in Time… is a retrospective of thirty years of Verna’s work, a “visual snapshot of a creative journey through three decades.” The artist observes that, “everything we know about past civilizations, we learn by studying the art created during that period. Oftentimes, I feel more like a historian than an artist. I am visually documenting spaces and places in time. It is not only a privilege to be an artist, but a responsibility. I am just one of the many keepers of the culture.”

Verna Hart is well-qualified to be a gatekeeper of Black American culture. She was a student of Romare Bearden who has collaborated with Spike Lee and steeped herself in the Jazz tradition. Her expressionistic style bears the direct influence of Jazz: its syncopated rhythm, rich tonality, carefully crafted but seemingly carefree harmony and, most importantly, its ability to capture not only a fleeting mood but a complete human experience. She melds colors like a musician arranges notes, creating a spirit and a beat that pervades her images. “Jazz is the medium of my work. My interpretation of Jazz into a pictorial structure lies in a change in my character and vision to a oneness with all means of this medium and with art itself.”

Verna Hart received her Bachelors in Fine Art from the Corcoran School of Art and her Masters in Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute. She has completed additional studies at Cooper Union, Parsons School of Design and the Universita di Arte in Venice. Her work has been exhibited widely in the United States and Africa, including exhibitions at the Studio Museum (New York) and the Eubie Blake National Museum (Baltimore).
