INTERNATIONAL VISIONS GALLERY is pleased to present yarn collages by Ghanaian artist Yaw Obuobi, on view December 17, 2010 through January 22, 2011. In the series Rhythmic Pulse, his manipulation of yarn via intricate shredding, weaving, and layering the medium captures “the evolution of culture in rhythm as reflected in the soul of a people.” Astoundingly realistic portraiture alongside abstractive interpretations of traditional symbols and beliefs provides an enriching impression of indigenous life in Ghana.
Obuobi has exhibited widely in his native Ghana, and is in the permanent collections of Kotoka International Airport, The Bank of Ghana, and Ashanti Goldfields Company. His work been exhibited in England, Spain, Austria, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and the United States. Locally, his exhibitions include the Maryland Museum of African Art, Howard University Gallery, and multiple showings at International Visions Gallery.
