Kevin Cole is a well-established sculptor,
painter, and muralist. Cole’s sculptural paintings hug the
wall and are moderately small, with portions that thrust toward
the viewer. The energy in these compact compositions is musical;
the forms take unexpected turns and leaps. These sculptures are
friendly and inviting, yet they are imbued with tragic memories.
Cole’s paintings in the shape of ties use the form in two
ways: as a symbol of the world of power and as a reminder of the
lynching rope that was
once a part of African-American life.
Cole also demonstrates his talent in many colorful constructions
paying homage to such important women as Rosa Parks and Billie Holiday.
In 1996 Cole was commissioned by Coca-Cola to paint a 15-story-high
mural on a building opposite of the Olympic Stadium in Atlanta,
Georgia. Cole’s work is in the collections of the Corcoran
Gallery; Nations Bank, Charlotte; IBM, New York; and The Tampa Museum
in Florida.
