Fred Kato Mutebi, native of Uganda,
Mutebi is active in printmaking and his work has traditionally
celebrated Uganda’s natural beauty and also
focuses on the need to preserve that beauty. Mutebi
also creates works that carry social and political
messages as well relying on anecdotes and stories
to capture those messages. His primary mediums are
printing and painting. He has found a method that
combines the two to his satisfaction, namely relief
printing. This technique allows the artist a wider
palette through multiple applications of pigment.
Mutebi prints a single piece five times as he moves
from light to dark colors, etching out the contours
of the image in progressive stages according to the
colors applied. Mutebi’s work involves crisp
lines and clear forms, which allows him to focus on
patterns in his environment. Mutebi is a Fullbright
Scholar and has received the highest honors as a working
artist in Africa. Mutebi has exhibited throughout
Europe, Africa and Japan.
Hours: Wednesday - Thursday 11-6 P.M., Friday
- Saturday 12-7 P.M.
