Sylvie Barcelo, (1959 - 1994) was
born in Montreal, Quebec. Sylvie exhibited widely
in Canada and the United States. She also exhibited
in Bamako, Mali and Mogadishu, Somalia. Strongly influenced
by her extensive travels throughout India, Nepal,
the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas, Barcelo
combined symbols and colors from distinct cultures
to create her own distinctive style. Her experiences
particularly from Mali and Somalia profoundly shaped
her painting style in terms of her use of space, color,
and structural forms. Barcelo's paintings are deeply
personal and yet insistently connected to broad cultural
codes. As these highly evocative works continue to
inspire audiences, her vibrant and colorful acrylic
paintings in fact bear her legacy. A year before her
passing, in 1993, Sylvie was the recipient of grants
from the D.C. Commission on the Art and Humanities
and The National Endowment for the Arts. Her work
has been collected through out the world by many private
collectors. Please join us for this special exhibition.
