Presently,
Haiti is well represented by talented self-taught as well as formally
trained artists. Various artists from Port-au-Prince to the Provinces
including three members of Saint Soleil: Prospere Pierre Louis,
Levoy Exil, and Loui Saint-Fleurant draw inspiration from Voodoo
beliefs and practice. Other artists, whose styles vary from naïve
to impressionistic, include Pascale Monnin, Frantz Zepherin, and
Avril Forest. Other works in this collection include iron sculpture
and beaded Drapo Voodoo flags. Tara Griffin, curator of the Haitian
Art Exhibition, has lived in Haiti for three years. As an independent
agent with the prestigious “Galerie Monnin” in Petion-ville,
she works directly with artists and has developed acute understanding
of the creative energy fueling Haitian art. The “Gallery Monnin”
has been in operation for over 40 years, working very closely with
prestigious artists such as Simil, Senatus, and Yves Michaud.
