“Art for the Soul”

International Visions Gallery has partnered with Homes of Color Magazine to present Art for the Soul, a month-long gallery exhibition featuring the work of noted artist Annie Lee and the inaugural showing of comedian J. Anthony Brown’s critically acclaimed artwork. The Eventful weekend opened on Friday welcoming party where over 500 guests arrived to meet and greet the artists. J. Anthony Brown was given a proclamation for his continued work with The American Diabetes Association and his JAB Foundation to help raise awareness and funds for children with diabetes. (www.janthonybrown.com).   Annie Lee was also given proclamation that evening by the Prince George’s County Executive for her life time devotion to the arts and inspiration to other artists and people of color.  On Saturday, November 5th The American Diabetes Association will set up eight tables at Center Court to display and distribute information regarding diabetes testing, screening, awareness and local programs.  As a special edition to the event, Homes of Color Magazine, J. Anthony Brown and Annie Lee will be on-site to promote diabetes awareness. Homes of Color Magazine will also feature a “decorated living space” to promote awareness of the magazine and home décor.

The Opening reception was held November 5th and both artists were present. The reception was very attended with over 200 guests in attendance. The exhibition runs from November 4-December 6, 2005 at the International Visions Gallery.

"Changing Perceptions"

October 8, 2005 International Visions Gallery sponsored a reception for new paintings by Helen Zughaib, entitled “Changing Perceptions.” Her new work focused on the abaya, the head covering that women wear in the Middle East.  According to Zughaib the abaya that women wear in the Middle East is often misunderstood by the West.  It can be seen as an outward symbol of repression, oppression and restriction.  For many women who wear the abaya, it is seen as shelter, comfort modesty and tradition

Helen Zughaib, a native of Lebanon, received her degree in fine arts from Syracuse University and studied at Northeast London Polytechnic School of Art in England.  Her work reflects influences of both Middle Eastern and American cultures.  Working in gouache, she makes paintings with contemporary imagery, while her use of color, intricate detail and pattern makes reference to her roots in traditional Middle Eastern art.

The exhibition was very received with patrons from as far as New York.  We were also very pleased to have the Lebanese Ambassador’s wife who has collected Helen’s work visit the gallery.
