A native of Bangladesh and a professor at Radford University,
Halide Salam’s oil paintings make a powerful artistic and political
statement. Salam’s recent works walk a fine line between the
figurative and the abstract, transmitting a message that is at once
boldly controversial and slyly veiled. “Title Withheld”
employs the timelessness of abstraction to convey feelings provoked
by the immediacy of contemporary events and issues. Salam’s
heavily impasto surfaces draw parallels between the physical layers
of paint and the metaphysical layers of truth in our own world. The
viewer must process her work from the perspective of their own political
biases, particularly in her provocative series of American flags.
Halide Salam’s work has been shown throughout the world, including
the Maryland Art Institute, the State Gallery of Istanbul, the Bangladesh
Art Academy, the Danville Museum, the Arlington Arts Center, the Roanoke
Museum of Fine Arts and the Colonnade Gallery.
