"Mali, Beyond Timbuktu" is a mixed bag
of a group show featuring black-and-white photographs
by native Malians as well as foreign-born artists.
Though Mali counts itself among the world's poorest
nations, these tourist-grade pictures favor cheerier
views of the workaday activities of an agrarian land,
such as livestock markets and onion harvests, or pretty
images of sunbaked mosques. Former Peace Corps volunteer
Shawn Davis, on assignment in Mali to teach photography
to teens, turned out some lovely pictures that reek
of nostalgia. If only he'd shown his students' work
instead.
